On Sunday the 4th of February, committee members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Margate and others travelled to Ashford where the Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain Gregorios led the service establishing a new Church and a new Community. The Church is that of The Resurrection of Christ. It is situated at 44 Cryol Rd, Ashford, Kent, TN23 5AS
The service was attended by the Cyprus High Commissioner Mr Euripides Evriviades as well as the Bishop of Dover and other local dignitaries. After the service, the congregation was invited for lunch in the hall of the church.
Following lunch, Mr Yerolemos Karios, the President of the new Community welcomed the dignitaries and the people attending the ceremony. Archbishop Gregorios congratulated Mr Karios and the members of the committee for taking the initiative and organising the new Community.
Mr Evriviades also congratulated the founders in a rousing address and presented the newly elected Mr Karios with a flag of Cyprus. All of the speakers thanked the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott, the Bishop of Dover who kindly agreed to the use of the church by the Greek Community of Ashford for the minimal fee of £1 per year.
At the end of the function, the Margate representatives sought the blessing of the Archbishop, congratulated Mr Karios and his committee and travelled back to Margate. It was a very enjoyable day.
